Scripture: Matthew 26:17-30

It is to easy when it comes to the Lord’s Supper to forget what it is all about. We go through the motions of eating the bread and drinking the cup as a ritual or routine rather than as an act of remembrance and worship. In Matthew 26 Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper as a time self examination and a remembrance that He is our Passover Lamb.

Sometimes we expect something to be one way, and then we discover that they are another. Unfortunately, this can be true of the gospel. We come to Christ with a certain set of preconceptions, and then he often spends the rest of our lives course correcting them. This is true of us, and the apostles and the people who lived in the first century. Everyone seemed to have their own preconceptions of the Messiah, of the Christ. So, when confronted with the true gospel, there were varied reactions to Him and to His message. To better understand Christ, his gospel, and responses to Him, let us look at the varied responses from Jesus’ time.

In our broken world true joy can often be elusive. “God with us” reminds us that joy is not merely a feeling, but a choice of way of life resulting from the joy found in our salvation in Christ. This joy is contagious, communal, and ultimately transcends our circumstances.
