Skepticism in the Bible is on the rise, among both those who claim to be Christian and those who do not. This has resulted in increasing numbers of Christians who do not read their Bible, do not hold to a biblical world view, and look no different than the rest of the world. This skepticism stems from a concerted attack on the validity and truthfulness of the Scriptures. We are bombarded by all sides, from education institutions, political attacks, History Channel programming, novels such as Dan Brown’s Da’ Vinci Code, and Hollywood movies. Despite this we can trust the Bible is the Word of God by faith supported by the reason of the evidence.

We often wonder why God’s people and the wicked must co-exist together. Jesus answers this in Matthew 13 in the Parable of the Weeds. It is so that God’s people can increase along side those who are not. The question is are you wheat or a weed?

Sometimes the gospel message is received eagerly. Sometimes it is not. According to Matthew 13 the difference is not due to the presentation, but due to the heart of the one hearing it. In the Parable of the Sower Jesus identifies four types of heart responses to hearing the message of the kingdom of God. What type of heart do you have?

Jesus often taught in parables. In Matthew 13 the disciples question Jesus on why he spoke in parables rather than directly. His response: so that those with faith can hear and understand.

We are told that everyone is a child of God and that we all are part of God’s family. No matter what we believe or what we do. The problem is that this belief is not biblical and does not match what Jesus taught about the family of God. The true family of God are those who are adopted by Him through the transforming faith in Christ that results in his children looking more and more like Christ.

In our materialistic and naturalistic world, we demand God show us a sign. We demand a sign that He exists. We demand a sign that He loves us. We demand a sign that He is who He says He is. Although There are many signs that point to God, if we are not careful we will miss the only sign that really matters: The death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are proverbially told that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Yet, if we are honest with ourselves we know that this is not true. Words can hurt and do have consequences. In Matthew 12 Jesus reminds us that our words matter and can have eternal consequences.

When it comes to Jesus we often think that there is neutral ground, that we can put off making a decision concerning Him. The problem is that in Matthew 12 Jesus does not allow this. He declares, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Therefore, you must choose.

In the first century many of the Jewish leaders misunderstood Jesus, and thus rejected him as Messiah. If we are not careful, we also can misunderstand Jesus. The result being that we worship a Jesus of our own creation, rather than as revealed in God’s Word. In Matthew 12 Jesus is revealed as God’s prophesied chosen Servant who is both humble and gentle, but also the saving King.
