In Matthew 24 the disciples inquire of Jesus when His kingdom would come. After detailing ten birth pains leading up to the end, Jesus speaks of something curious. He says, “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand).” (Matthew 24:15). Jesus says the sign of his soon coming kingdom is the abomination of desolation. As twenty first century Christians we may be wondering to what Jesus is referring. Jesus’ implication is that in order to understand what he is talking about that we need to understand the book of Daniel. In Daniel 2 and 7 God lays out the course of the kingdoms of this world, a proverbial game of thrones.

Although the Scriptures are quite clear that God’s judgment is coming in holiness and righteousness, judgment is not God’s desire. In Matthew 23-24 Jesus reminds us that God’s desire is for us to be a part of His kingdom rather than in rebellion to it.
