Although they practiced outward forms of religion, Jesus accuses them of neglecting the more important things: justice and mercy and faithfulness. They were more concerned about outward conformance to religious tradition then with inward transformation and regeneration. It is this type of hypocrisy that Jesus condemns and lead others away from Christ.

Jesus likewise cautions us to examine our own lives to make sue we are not turning people away from Christ for the same.
